07.10.04 Noel speaks about sixth album
Noel Gallagher talks exclusively to Xfm about Oasis' turbulent, long-awaited sixth studio album, their possible collaboration with Ringo Starr and Liam's burgeoning songwriting talent.

With Oasis' sixth studio album seemingly bogged-down in recording hell, beleagured by a series of mishaps, about-faces and line-up changes, mainman Noel Gallagher spoke exclusively to Xfm to set the record straight about how he's setting the recording straight.

On recording in LA

"...'Cos all the studios in England are shite, apparently. Which I'd have to concur with. Apart from mine of course, but it gets a bit too easy in my studio."

On the saga of the new album

"It's never been scrapped because we didn't like it or anything like that. But as time's progressed and gone on we've written more songs."

On the new songs

"He [Liam]'s done loads. He's probably writing as we speak. He's written tonnes. He's doing alright, he's got a few belters actually. Considering he can't play a fucking nte on the guitar he's doing alright."

On filling the Oasis drum stool

"We're gonna try to get his [Zack Starkey- son of Ringo] Dad down in the studio and get them on the same track. But Ringo'll probably tell us to fuck off."

29.09.04 More info on new album

Noel Gallagher, the man Oasis simply refer to as 'The Guvnor', has been talking exclusively to Xfm Online about Liam's new songs, going out on tour again "sharpish" and recording with one of The Beatles.

[the oasis lineup before the break with drummer Alan]

Gallagher explained that Oasis are about to travel to Los Angeles to complete work on their highly anticipated, and as-yet-untitled new album, where (after the departure of drummer Alan White) the band will be enlisting the help of former Beatle Ringo Starr's son Zak Starkey. Starkey filled the drum stool for the band's recent Glastonbury Festival appearance, and Noel explained that he also wants Zak's father on the record too.

"Zak will drum on the bulk of it," he explained to Xfm, "And we're gonna try - while we're out there - to get his Dad down the studio cos he lives in LA. So we're gonna try and get him on cos we've got this one song which is quite... well, fucking funnily enough, it sounds like The Beatles, and we're gonna try and get him and his Dad on the same track. Then again Ringo might just tell us to f**k off."

Apart from Glastonbury and one-off concerts at Watford Colosseum and the Albert Hall, Oasis haven't undertaken a fullUK tour since summer July 2002, but as soon as the album's finished the band will definitely be hitting the road.

"To be honest," Noel continued, "We spent that much money f**king pissing about on the new album we'll be touring it for the next four years. So by the time this next album cycle comes around everyone will be sick to f**king death of Oasis. We'll have to play London fifteen times I'd have thought, but we'll have to start doing gigs sharpish."

As for the material on the new album, Noel has confirmed rumours that his brother, frontman Liam Gallagher, has been busy writing some impressive new songs.

"He [Liam] has been writing tonnes. He's probably writing as we f**king speak. He's written loads and loads and loads. He's doing okay at the writing, he's got a few belters. His songs are really coming on. Considering he can't play a f**king note on the guitar he's doing alright."

17.09.04 The New Album is Underway!

Oasis are facing yet another problem with their forthcoming album - now they’ve got too many songs!

The band’s sixth album has been plagued with trouble since recording began earlier in the year. Recordings made with Death In Vegas were dropped, as was much of the work completed before the Glastonbury festival. The band have re-entered the studio with Thrills producer Dave Sardy and according to Noel Gallagher have begun recording the entire album again from scratch.

Noel said: "We sent Dave Sandy few tracks of this cobbled together stuff to mix and he sent them back and it didn't sound right so we said ‘Why don't you come over and we'll start again?’, so we've completely started from scratch bar one song that has been finished for the last, I don't know, ten years. One of the songs on there ‘The Importance Of Being Idle’ is one of the best tunes I have ever written. It is The Kinks meets The La's. It is blinding. We’ve written 66 songs, the majority of which I can’t believe our kid’s done. I’ve only written 14 of them. He’s done most of the rest of them."

Other songs though to appear on the album include A Bell Will Ring and The Meaning Of Soul, both played at the band’s ropey performance at Glastonbury this year. It is speculated that the first single form the album will be released in February next year.

29.06.04 Oasis Triumph!!

Oasis made their triumphant return as they headlined the PYRAMID STAGE in front of a rapturous audience. The band, now joined by Ringo Starr’s son Zak on drums, also treated fans to a taste of what’s to come from their forthcoming sixth studio album.

< liam at the glastonbury festival >

Opening the set with Rock ‘N’ Roll Star, Liam Gallagher, dressed in a white parka jacket simply shouted to the crowd, ”Glastonbury”. Oasis ripped through a career-spanning set including the tracks ’Cigarettes & Alcohol’, ’Wonderwall’, ’Live Forever’, ’Stop Crying Your Heart Out’, ’Songbird’, ’Columbia’, ’Don’t Look Back In Anger’ and the set-closer - a cover of The Who’s ’My Generation’.

The band also gave the Glastonbury crowd an idea of what to expect from their forthcoming as-yet-untitled sixth studio album, with the new tracks ‘A Bell Will Ring’, and ’The Meaning Of Soul’. Before playing ’Stop Crying Your Heart Out’, Liam told the audience: “We’d like to dedicate this one to the England football team”. Tonight was the first time that the band have played at Glastonbury since their headlining 1995 appearance, and marked their biggest outdoor show since their gig at Manchester’s Old Trafford cricket ground in 2002.

Last time Oasis took to the Glastonbury stage they were joined by Robbie Williams who, just after quitting Take That, came to the festival in 1995 and even joined the group onstage to dance.

Starkey was adding his skills on the drumkit following the departure of former sticksman Alan White earlier this year.

25.06.04 Oasis play The Poole

< liam & noel on stage >

Oasis played their first gig of the year tonight - and gave some hints to what they’ll be playing at this weekend’s Glastonbury Festival. The gig at the Poole Lighthouse, Dorset, is their first since a small run of dates in Germany and Ireland in March 2003, and their smallest UK show with the full band since 2002.

The band’s 90 minute set was mainly comprised of greatest hits, but also featured two songs set to appear on their as-yet-untitled new album -
A Bell Will Ring and The Meaning Of Soul.

A Bell Will Ring has been described by NME as a mid-tempo track in a similar vein to Live Forever or Songbrid, while The Meaning Of Soul, written by Liam, is a full on rock number reminiscent of Bring It On Down. The set ended with a cover of The Who’s My Generation.

It was the first chance fans had to see new drummer Zak Starkey, who filled in for Alan White, who left the band earlier this year .

22.04.04 News roundup.

The well of Oasis news is incredible dry at the moment. Not much to mention besides the usual rumours of "all the summer festivals Oasis are going to attend", just crap really. I guess there is not much else to do than to wait for Noel and the rest of the band to finish the new album.

It will definitely be exciting to hear the first single, when it is released. When that will happen is unknown, but hopefully some time this year.

21.03.04 Oasis no. 1 driving tune!

21.03.04 Oasis on summer festivals?

When Noel and Liam Gallagher arrived in the pages of NME in '94, they vowed to revive the rock 'n' roll spirit and make excess fashionable again. Ten years and millions of album sales later, they’ve left behind them a trail of broken marriages, enough drug use to prop up the Columbian economy and more great music than most bands can dream about.

In the same time Trip Hop and Nu metal have all come and gone. Few people don’t get a shiver down the spine whenever they hear the garbled glory of Champagne Supernova or Live Forever blasting out the pub jukebox. Who cares if Noel and Liam are now supported by the grinning guitarist from Heavy Stereo, a bassist who thought up Hurricane #1 and no drummer? This summer they will play their hits live, Liam will stand at the lip of the stage and sneer and all will be right with the world again.

10.03.04 Oasis split with Producers!

Noel Gallagher has revealed that Oasis are in the final stages of recording the new album, although they have abandoned working with Death In Vegas' Tim Holmes and Richard Fearless who were previously producing the album. The band were recording in Sawmills Studios in Cornwall with the duo, but now reports claim that the sessions didn't work out according to plan and Noel now plans to helm the new record himself.

However Gallagher has stated that the new album already has a confirmed tracklisting and is nearly complete – despite the split and the recent departure of drummer Alan White. "We've done a bunch of really good demos" he explained "And we put together a running order of what we thought the album was gonna be and we whittled it down to ten tracks. But we've had that for a few months now."

As with Heathen Chemistry it also appears that Noel will be sharing the song writing duties with the rest of the band, with Liam Gallagher contributing a new song entitled Love Is Like A Bomb. "We all demo separately and then I always get the last say on what's going to be recorded, much to Liam's frustration." Noel continued, "I'm quite fair about it all. It so happens that this time everybody's writing an equal amount of songs."

There is no release date pencilled in for the as-yet-untitled new record as yet, but working song titles include `Stop The Clocks', 'Longer', 'Singin' Your Life', 'You Wanna Feel My Shame', 'Say It', 'Revolution Man' and 'The Good Rebel'.

20.02.04 News roundup.

Both Gallagher brothers are now being investigated by the police. Noel has admitted trespassing on a railway line, and could be facing a fine. Liam is rumored to have been involved in a bust up with yet another tabloid photographer.

The official site has posted that a new documentary on Oasis is on its way. The band would like fans to contribute with rare material from the early days.

Liam and Noel Gallagher took time out from recording new album in Cornwall to watch the NME show where Jet, The Stands, The Killers and The Ordinary Boys performed at the sold out Hammersmith Palais.

Finally Alan White made an announcement on his brother Steve's website. It claimed that him leaving Oasis due to problems with his wrists is" Utter Bullshit" - However he does not tell us what actually happened.

04.02.04 Noel Do the Drums.

Oasis are keeping it real while working on their new album. The lads are staying in a two-star hotel, not the posh rooms available at Cornwall’s Sawmills Studios, where they also recorded Definitely Maybe. They stay at the £60-a-night Cormorant Hotel in Golant, near the studio.
In a rare chat, busy Noel confirmed that he will be the band’s drummer now. Everyone are pitching in, though. “All four of us are writing. It’s a total collective”.

17.01.04 The rumours were true!

12.01.04 Alan White - Drummed Out!

Oasis are proving yet again that they're a real rock band by keeping up the great tradition of rock bands since rock began: changing drummers every few years. First they dumped Tony McCarroll. Now Alan White is quitting too.

Unusually for Oasis there are no reports of punch ups, fights and shouting matches accompanying the announcement. Alan's just knackered his hands and he needs to give his wrists a rest.

Alan had to step away from the drums and take a break during the band's last tour because of injury. His brother Steve briefly took over the beat duties, but whether he'll replace Alan full time remains to be seen.

14.01.04 No Official Statement... yet.

This weeks rumours of Alan White's departure from Oasis hit the magazines, web forums etc. However it must be stressed that there's been no official statement from Oasis confirming that these rumours are true.

In the past Oasis has been known to announce statements when members of the band were leaving the band. When Bonehead and Guigsy left, both within a week, official reports were posted on the official website. By the time of this writing nothing official has been heard, only rumours and speculation.

The news of Alan White's recurring wrist injury were first posted on the website of Top of the Pops and later the tabloids followed.

It can't be long.
My guess is that a statement will be released soon, which will either confirm or decline Alan White's departure. For the fans it is surely bad news is Whitey is to leave Oasis, he's not only a drummer with loads of talent, but also a great character, who is loved by all Oasis fans. If the stories should be true he will surely be missed.

01.01.04 Oasis in 2004 - 6th Album.

During April 2003, Noel Gallagher commented to Australian magazine Heat, that: "We'll take the rest of the year off and the best part of 2004 will probably be spent in the studio, but I'm not in any rush, to be honest, I haven't really talked about a new album yet. So I would have thought at the end of 2004, beginning of 2005."
May 2003, Noel said to NME, that "Liam's written loads of new tunes and, as much as it pains me to say it, they're amazing! I'm writing these six-minute long Champagne Supernova things and Liam's writing all these three minute pop songs. He's got the blues, man. His new songs sound like The Yardbirds. He's been going into the studio loads with Gem. Gem's a really good sounding board".

Rumours of new songs have been flying around here are some of the most relevant.

Slow - A song that ex-Oasis producer Owen Morris described as "beautiful" in September 1997's issue of Q magazine, unreleased and only known public performance is in a guitar shop during in a bomb scare along with 5 other tracks, though Noel has mentioned it's unlikely to be on new lp as it's not really an Oasis style track. Noel has said: "It's very slow. And it will probably be on a solo record that I plan on doing in the near future. Originally, it was written for Oasis, but I don't think it is an Oasis song. It's a bit too much of a ballad, really, which we're trying to get away from." This song was written around 1997 - Be Here Now sessions.

I Gotta Get It Back - In March 2000 Noel said he wrote this song on their Japan tour. Noel said this song is going on the new album. It could have been a working title.

During October, 2002: On the German TV channel Viva, Noel was interviewed on the show 'Fast Forward'. In the interview Noel revealed that he has already written four new songs for the next album:

Stop the Clocks - Noel: "could be massive" and on Feb 20, 03 Today FM Radio Show "to me it's the best song i've ever written". On February 14, 2003 he commented to Teletext: "It's called Stop The Clocks and people are saying it's the best song I've ever written," he enthuses. "And that's from mates outside the band who were: 'Aye, that's OK,' when I played Wonderwall to them for the first time. I've got so bored waiting for The La's to come back that it sounds like how I'd want them to if they did return."

Don't be Down - Noel: "Sounds a bit like Neil Young." However, he has also commented that the song was written for his daughter Anais so it will never see the light of day.

The Magic Can't be Right - Noel: "Sounds like the Rolling Stones" and on Feb 20, 03 Today FM Radio Show"It's pretty good"
